Battery adapters, the matrix

Running one brand's tool off another brand's battery is possible, it is widely sold, and nobody says plainly which direction works or what it costs you in safety. These are the pairs people actually look for.

An adapter has a direction. An adapter that runs a Makita tool off a Ryobi battery does not do the reverse: that takes a different adapter. The left column is the battery you own, the middle column is the tool you want to power. None of these products is made or approved by the manufacturers involved.

Why these adapters exist

A tool battery costs between a third and half the price of the bare tool. Someone who owns four Ryobi packs and wants a machine Ryobi does not make faces a simple choice: buy a second set of batteries from another maker, or buy a twenty dollar adapter. That is the demand the search suggestions measure, and it is strong in all three languages we sampled.

The brand most often named as the starting point is Parkside, Lidl's house platform. That figures: it is the cheapest platform, so the one whose owners want to leave without writing off what they have already paid for.

The three cases where you should not use one

An adapter cuts the conversation between battery and tool. The battery no longer knows what the tool is asking for, the tool no longer knows what the battery can give. Protection against overheating and deep discharge then rests on a twenty dollar third-party housing.

  • Cutting tools. Circular saw, reciprocating saw, chainsaw. Losing power mid cut is not an inconvenience, it is an accident.
  • Work at height. Anything used on a ladder or scaffold. A tool that cuts out, or restarts on its own, puts the balance of the person holding it at stake.
  • Continuous heavy load. Rotary hammer in concrete, angle grinder, mortar mixer. These are the cases where the battery heats most, so the ones where its protection matters most.

One reasonable use remains: a work light, a fan, a shop vacuum, a USB charger. Low current devices, set on the ground, that you can keep an eye on.
